Lid Hygiene

An important treatment in eyelid and tear-film disorders is “lid hygiene”. The aim of lid hygiene is to help unblock the eyelid glands, remove flakes or bacteria and encourage healthy tears to lubricate the eye.

WARM COMPRESS: Use a heated eye mask or a clean damp washcloth and place it in the microwave for 15-20 seconds. Check the temperature by touching it to your cheek before placing it on the eyes. Place the warm compress on closed eyelids for 3-5 minutes or until it becomes cool. Repeat 3-4 times a day.

LID SCRUBS: Twice a day put one pump of foam on wash cloth (or use one wipe). With your eyes closed, scrub upper and lower eyelid margin (root of your eyelashes) for 15 seconds per lid. Read the directions of your lid scrub as some brands may require you to rinse lids after use.

HYPOCLOR: For additional cleansing, with eyes closed, spray one squirt of hypoclor onto each eye.

OINTMENT: If prescribed ointment, use as directed after lid scrub and cleansing.

ARTIFICIAL TEARS: Use artificial tears in both eyes 4 times a day.
